German court bans triple barrelled last names

crazysquare • Tue 05 of May, 2009 (20:17 UTC)

German courts bans anyone using more than two last names. Court ruled out saying having more than two last names makes it difficult to trace family line.

Frieda Rosemarie Thalheim married Hans-Peter Kunz-Hallstein in 1997 but both had wanted to retain their surnames.

The couple challenged the old law made in 1993 preventing them using triple barrelled names. German court reaffirmed that it will not allow triple barrelled names, the couple were disappointed as they would like to retain their last names.
